Mental health in the Armed Forces

A FOI request has revealed startling new figures surrounding the mental health of those serving in the Armed Forces.

New figures have shown that mental health emergencies accounted for more than one in ten air evacuations of military personnel in the last year.

Out of the 1,210 servicemen and women who operate overseas but were flown back to the UK in the last year, 121 of those were a result of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD or stress.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman has responded to the FOI, saying: “We are committed to the mental health of our service personnel and have increased funding in this area by £20 million”.
